Raymond John Memorial Pairs

Posted by Richard on October 10, 2011 at 4:40 AM Comments comments (0)

The weekend before last saw the Raymond John Memorial Pairs event held for the first time at the fishery.

The match was held on the specimen lake with twenty anglers all competing to win an array of prizes from different sponsors and raise cash for the White Springs registered charity which provides much needed help for the children’s cancer ward at Cardiff hospital.

This was to be the third such event held on the lake this year in aid of the charity.

Event organiser Sparky Jon, a long time regular at the fishery and one of the founding members of the ever more popular Carp and Co angling forum had arranged with Vince to run the event on what was to turn out be a gorgeous weekend.

Forum members and other anglers took a break from their syndicate and hometown lakes and travelled from all over Wales and beyond to take part in this much esteemed event.

The pegs were all arranged by 2pm on Friday afternoon and anglers proceeded to set up their equipment. The rods were cast in at 6.00pm for the scheduled thirty six hour competition.

The fishing started off quite slow as the event warmed up with so many experienced anglers on the lake. The fish going to ground with the sudden influx of lines into the water didn’t help and the evening past without a single alarm being heard.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, reports started coming in that Brian Hollett (Tony Smith memorial organiser) had landed a beautiful twenty seven pound mirror from peg nine at approximately twenty past five. This was a big fish due to the number of thirties that had been out in previous weeks and looked like it could be a sure fire winner.

Other reports of fish being caught early on the Saturday morning were also reported and verified with Gav Morris landing another mirror from between the trees to a reported 16 pound.

The weather, although overcast became quite warm through the day and the fishing slowed again.

In the afternoon many of the competitors took time out and reeled in the rods and joined the barbeque for a chat on the previous night’s events and lack of bites before returning to their swims.

The match was going to be close as there was information that a few hard fighting fish were lost through the previous night.

Sunday morning was going to prove decisive.

Then as daybreak wandered out of the night sky, White Springs catching machine Alfie Calford got on the board with a thirteen pounder. And the carp were on the feed again.

With the match due to end at midday it looked as though Brian was going to be the outright winner with his earlier capture from a Weston bait service pineapple special.

Then at about eleven a.m. from the old cabin swim there was a sound of a screaming alarm and lots of shouts as John Taylor’s lifted rod arced round.

Taylors as he is know amongst the Carp & Co forum members skilfully landed his quarry which turned out to be CTC a named fish that weighed in at thirty one pound fourteen ounces, the heaviest the carp has been caught on the lake to date and a new UK personal best for Taylors.

But all was not over, Taylor’s angling partner Phil Fear who was helping with the weighing turned as his alarm sounded and proceeded to play a fish which didn’t provide the vigour or bend that Taylors rod had produced.

None the less Phil landed a twelve pound mirror to save his session from a blank and duly got a soaking from his fellow anglers as did Taylor.

The event proved a success with raffle and entry fees raising seven hundred and fifty pound so far for the cause.

Again, big thanks must go to Vince for the barbeque and for closing the lake for the event.

To Nash, and the other sponsors for providing the raffle and competition prizes.

Another great charity event which, as White Springs seems to do.

Bring anglers male and female from all walks of life, too not only hope to catch and win these events but to also have a thoroughly good time whilst doing it.

Until the next one.

News up to the 26th September.

Just like the weather the fishing has improved with Daniel Rees from Neath fishing Peg 8 off the point landed our big common weighing in at 36lb 8oz.

Another angler to do well was our head bailiff Gavin who took a weekend off to fish Megs Corner trying out some new baits from Lammos Baits. Their new popcorn boilie got 7 fish in 72hrs best being Billy the bear at 37lb 8oz, then a 26lb common a 25lb mirror and 4 mid doubles while Martin Mathews was on peg 1 finally landed 12 fish last week all on pop up boilies his best was 22lb 8oz mirror then down to mid doubles.

On the match side.

The pleasure lakes have been better with Neil Daniels weighting in 102lb 5oz Tony Wale 63lb 5oz, Ryan Drummer had 57lb 7oz all off the canal, but the fish of the week goes to Kevin Dreece from Llanelli landing a 4lb 1oz perch using maggot and worm.

Just to remind any anglers who are thinking of coming down to the fishery to fish the Specimen lake this weekend. The lake is fully booked for the Raymond John memorial charity event. Donations can be made at the fishery over the coming weekend. All proceeds will go to the fisheries registered charity, which is Cardiff Childrens Cancer Unit.

The Tony Smith Memorial Review.

Posted by Richard on August 29, 2011 at 6:15 PM Comments comments (1)

The Tony Smith Memorial Review.

The Tony Smith Memorial was again a huge success as White Springs continues to support a charity that is close to its heart. Raising £1230 over the forty eight hour event.

Proprietor Vince Lloyd again closed down the specimen lake so what is now going to become an annual event, could take place.

Many anglers, young and old travelled from far and wide to take part in the event.

Speaking among White Springs regulars, this is the one that they would all like to win. Not for the array of prizes to be won. Just for the prestige of having your name on that shield!

There are many charity events held each year at the fishery (There is the up coming Raymond John Memorial Pairs match to name one) but Tony was well known around the lake. An ex forces man and avid carp angler, He and event organiser Brian his best mate, and angling partner, would regularly visit the specimen lake from their Bristol homes.

“He loved the place” Brian once told me over a cuppa on a weekend session.

You can tell from his voice when you speak to Brian that since Tony has passed away there is a sense of loss in his favourite pastime. From stories and little ditties that Brian passes on as you listen. You can bet that these two were a pair when they fished on the bank together.

It is characters like these that make White Springs what it is. Not only a place that you can go to fish. It’s a place where you can meet fellow anglers, like minded people who show compassion when there is a cause to be supported. The regular faces that grace the bank year in year out to show their support were again there in abundance.

Speaking to some anglers who were not at this year’s event because of prior commitments, you could tell that they were at a loss because of it, such is the will to take part.

Yet some will still turn up just to show their support by entering the raffle or donating money to the cause.

Anglers rest their swims and join the social atmosphere that these events create. Enjoying a hot snack from the barbecue laid on by the fishery.

Another big thank you must go to Brians new angling mate and event photographer Dianne. Dianne walked the lake too many times to remember and we have her to thank for the pictures that you see here today. Top Girl.

Vince thanks Dianne with some flowers and !!

All in all White Springs has shown its unending support yet again.

And as the sun sets on another success.

The pictures tell the rest.

(All the events pictures can be veiwed in the recently added pictures section of the website).

Until the next one.

There was a good turn out for the event which was held on the specimen lake. Due to angling pressure there were only four fish caught. A visiting angler from Dover entered the event and was lucky enough to land a 21 lb mirror carp to take the shield.

Second in the event was local angler Mike Williams who landed two fish on his home made boilies. The biggest being 14lb 6oz.

There were two other fish caught the biggest of the rest being 12lb 7oz.

There was also a lovely mirror carp caught from the old cabin from a visiting angler who was not entered in the event. It weighed in at 26lb 2oz.He told me that, that fish had made his trip from the Isle of Man worthwhile. Hope he can better it as he has a second week now on the new cabin to look forward too.

The event which is run in aid of cancer research was strongly sponsored again this year. There were prizes from Nash tackle. Lammos Baits, B&Q DIY superstores. CC Moore baits and lots of small prizes from local sponsors. A total of £1,230 was raised over the weekend.

A big thank you goes out to Vince for closing the Specimen Lake for the event. To Brian for his tireless endeavours in the organisation and planning. And to Dianne who always seems to capture the best moments on camera.

I have received the pictures and will post them as soon as I get the chance but due to a heavy schedule at present the best I will be able to do is the early part of next week.

Other news from around the fishery.

There have been some nice fish caught from both pleasure lake and the pit over the past week. Another Tench out of the pit weighing over 4lb.

This midweek match on the old canal was won by Lou Spinks with 58lb. Second was Terry with 48lb 2oz. Terry has only just returned after a two year break. Well done Terry. Third was Geoff Walker with 41lb 11oz.

Keep up the good work fellas.
