News and Catch Reports Post New Entry

Tench

Posted by peter fricker on March 30, 2010 at 8:09 AM

Can anyone tell me which are the better lakes and pegs for catching nice Tench, and what are the best methods and tactics on Whitesprings to catch them ?

I usually use the good old fashioned trusty Lift Float Rig with either a bunch of small redworm or a Lobs tail over chopped worm and Hemp, sometimes Caster over Hemp and Corn but i just cant seem to get them, tho it catches the Carp amongst others i really want to get to the Tench, any Tips or tricks for these beautiful fish would be gratefully appreciated,Tench season is almost upon us and next month is the best time to start fishing for them.

So come on guys, any Tench fishermen out there give us your tips..

thanks

Pete

Hey Pete,

I think if you are going to target Tench at the fishery then the Pleasure lake will hold the greater numbers (going on past catches/ stockings) and you will be more likely to get luck there. Whilst I haven't fished the Pleasure lake for a few seasons this is how I caught the Tench and would approach it . Corn and worm fished on the waggler just off the marginal shelf, hard on the bottom over groundbait. Obviously Tench are notoriously sweet toothed so I would opt for a sweet mix and flavoured corn (Pineapple, strawberry or scopex my favourites) on the hook. If conditions arn't good for the float then a light ledger/ small groundbait feeder in the same area with hair rigged double corn or worm. The traditional 'pin prick' bubbles or 'fizzing patches' are usually a dead give away of a Tench's location and moving in on these areas would be a good start. Why not fish 2 rods and try both methods to see how the fish prefer it. Obviously you will inevitably pick up other fish (carp, bream and silvers) on these tactics but I think the Tench, if in a good number will take over the swim. If as you say, you are using worm and corn and struggling to pin the Tench down then Maggot is another good bait. I suspect that you'd be hammered by the silvers but bunches of them may help deter unwanted silvers. Again same area as described previously, on the float over groundbait with maggot over the top. Hopefully any silvers will feed in the upper layers and leave your hookbait amongst the ground bait on the bottom for the Tench (in theory). I am a bit out of touch with the Tench fishing on the Pleasure lake but I hope Some of the info will help you.

There are Tench in the pit, although I don't think in great numbers, but I have seen some nice examples around the 5lb mark being caught there.

Check your home page for previous info I posted there If you havn't already seen it.

All the best with filling your net with Tincas mate,

Thank you for the valuable info Les,much appreciated.
I will try the pleasure lake on my next outing.
I was out fishing yesterday,on the new canal (Sunday ).Was cold, windy and a bit of rain, had no bites from 8am til 3pm then weather changed to a southerly wind and the sun came out and i had 3 small Carp around 4lb mark one after the other and a nice 1lb+ Roach all on bunch of worms and Bread,so what was turning out to be a blanker turned out ok in the end thankfully lol..
My next trip will be the pleasure lake but i tend not to go on there on a sunday as its usually plagued with a lot of noisy youngsters,i go to the old canal for piece and quiet and more choice of swims, but during the week when funds permit i go on the Pleasure lake,i like it on there for variety and some lovely impressive Roach...
